In the 1980s, Miami witnessed the rise of Art Basel, an international art fair that became a catalyst for the city's art renaissance. This event brought together artists, collectors, and enthusiasts from around the world, transforming Miami into a global art destination.
The Elegance of the Second-Floor Promenade
For those seeking a different perspective of the Fly’s Eye Dome and Palm Court, the Miami Design District offers a unique vantage point: the second-floor promenade. This elevated walkway allows visitors to view the dome from above, offering a new dimension to its captivating allure. In 1965, the visionary architect Buckminster Fuller (pictured above) designed and patented the Fly’s Eye Dome, a groundbreaking structure he called an "autonomous dwelling machine." The prototypes of this design, made of fiberglass spheres in various sizes (12-foot, 24-foot, 50-foot), were meticulously crafted by hand starting in 1977. Fuller's vision, however, was left incomplete as he passed away before realizing its full potential.
Fast forward almost 50 years, in 2011, when collector Craig Robins (pictued at left) acquired the 24-foot prototype. His intention was not just to preserve Fuller's legacy but also to incorporate it into the Miami Design District. Collaborating with The Buckminster Fuller Institute, Goetz Composites, ConformLab, and DRDesign, a program was initiated to complete Fuller’s vision using advanced technologies and materials. The result was the creation of a Fly’s Eye Dome that combined state-of-the-art materials, intelligence, and techniques, becoming a prominent feature of the Miami Design District.
