BLACK ADAM WINS
Besides the fact that Johnson cemented his ultra-star status at the next level, the suprise performance from Pierce Brosnan has fans celebrating his return to film. In this case he's a superhero. As Doctor Fate, Brosnan brings to life a DC comics mystic hero. "There's two characters in one, really," Brosnan explained to Comicbook.com. "You have Kent Nelson, and you have Doctor Fate, and he's one of the oldest characters in the pantheon of DC comics, and he's the most powerful sorcerer." He steals scene after scene with wit and style. His spectacular skills are fun to watch on the big screen.
Johnson hits a career high
THE BAD GOOD GUY
He's had all kinds of hit movies througout his stellar career but Dwayne Johnson reached a new career milestone with Black Adam rang up nearly $83 million in its first week. Johnson, one of the biggest brightest stars on the planet who's prolific body of work expands more than two decades is experiencing a career high. Of course we all know that the bulky super hero is a well-known and relatively bankable commodity in Hollywood. But his larger than life status, athletic prowess and strong screen charisma makes him a consistent fan favorite as a leading or supporting man. In Black Adam, he joins the DC Comics universe. It's not that Johnson wouldn't have been celebrated just the same but Black Adam is the largest opening day of his career.
Without giving away any spoilers, here's the Black Adam backstory. In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam was bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Black Adam. Nearly 5,000 years have passed, and Black Adam has gone from man to myth to legend. Now free, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern-day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone. We found childlike glee watching him zap, flatten and pulverize his evil foes. He was merciless.
One of the distinguishing features about Black Adam is the way he's marketed to the public. Known as a All-American and apple pie type movie star, #DwayneJohnson was more of an antihero in this film. He did the same things the bad guys did but for a good cause. That was enough to stimulate high interest for moviegoers over the weekend and we'll watch how it continues to track over the next few weeks.
